Frequently Asked Questions
The AHS Feeder Program teams will play in the Gold Crown Competitive league. Practices start in the beginning of November. Regular season games start in early January. There are preseason tournaments in late November or early December. There is a post season tournament in mid-February which can last multiple weeks. The league consists of a 12 game regular season. Typically a team will play 3-4 games in a pre-season tournament. 2 games are guaranteed in the post season tournament…but you can play as many as 5. Usually a team will get about 20 games.
Practices start in the beginning of November and are held at Arapahoe High School or Powell Middle School. We will practice twice a week normally - 1.5 to 2 hours per practice. We may explore other gym space if needed.
Nearly all the regular season games are double headers on Sundays. Occasionally there may be Saturday games. Tournament games can be any night of the week but typically fall on weekends.
The games can be at any high school in the Denver area (including Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins). Typically a team has to make one long trip per season. Some games will be held at Arapahoe High School or the Gold Crown Facility in Lakewood.
Practice schedules are usually based on gym availability and also coach preferences. The nights will vary week to week, but we do try to make the nights consistent throughout the season if possible.
No, this is not required. Players can use their uniform from previous years assuming thy still fit. Only new players are required to purchase a new uniform. The uniform consists of a reversible jersey and reversible shorts. Uniform numbers will be determined after tryouts and will be coordinated by the coaches. There is also an opportunity to get a basketball bag with name, number or both for an additional fee. Coaches will work with players after teams are formed to finalize numbers and uniform sizes. These need to be ordered immediately so they arrive in time for the pre-season tournaments.
The Arapahoe feeder program will charge a season fee ($185 in 2018-19) and uniform fees ($75 if needed). The teams play in the Gold Crown League…which will charge you an additional $150 per player. One pre-season tournament is covered in the Arapahoe Feeder Program Fee. The Post Season tournament is part of the Gold Crown League fee. If the team decides to play in any extra tournaments or a Fall league, this will be handled by the individual coaches and charged back to the individual players.
After making a team and accepting the roster spot, each family will be invoiced the proper amount. This amount will NOT include the Gold Crown league fee which will be paid at a later date directly to Gold Crown. Payments can be made on-line or by check (mailed to Arapahoe Feeder Program Coordinator).
It is highly recommended that each player attend both sessions. If there is a conflict please contact the AHS feeder coordinator and ensure that you communicate that you are still interested in being considered for a team.
As this is a competitive league, there is no minimum play requirement. However, we strongly encourage our coaches to play kids as much as possible based on the circumstances of the game.
This is a volunteer organization and most coaches come from the parent ranks. We try to ensure that each coach has some background/knowledge of basketball. If a coach from the parent ranks is not available, we will search for an outside experienced coach. AHS varsity coaches typically offer a clinic to interested coaches if there is enough interest
Gold crown has a gold and silver division...gold being more competitive. We attempt to field a gold and a silver team at each age group (5th thru 8th grade) depending on how many kids tryout. We have fielded 2 boys teams at each age for the past few years. We attempt to field one girls team at each age group as numbers are smaller.
This is optional for each team based on player availability and desire. The cost is not covered in the Arapahoe Feeder program fees...it is extra. The leagues start right after tryouts and go till mid October. Games are typically on Sundays. The teams are formed based on the Arapahoe Feeder Program tryouts.
On a ‘need’ basis, the AHS Feeder board of directors can choose to provide a “scholarship” to a family. The Family, in turn, will need to give back to the program in some way. Be a gym monitor.
No, not necessarily…but it is preferred. Gold Crown has rules stating that 60% of the roster must be in the High School’s district. Note that a player that is attending AHS will be favored over a non AHS player if all other skills are equal during the tryouts.
Yes, we will try to open the AHS gym on Saturday mornings in Sept and Oct to offer skill work.
